Homework requirements for Year Two
Home Reading
At the start of Week 3, students will receive a home reading book. This book will be accompanied by two comprehension sheets:
Your child should exchange their book (and the accompanying laminated comprehension) each Friday. This will take place in our shared learning area in the Year Two block. Parent volunteers will be needed. Please see me if you can assist.
Any home reading activities should be noted in your child's Read It Diary (this is the yellow book that you purchase as part of your child's booklist). In addition, each student will receive a excercise book - this is a notebook that they can use to record their comprehension answers or any other notes, drawings, thoughts or opinions they may have about their reading book. It is not necessary to complete written answers to comprehension questions. I am happy that, sometimes, this may be a verbal discussion between you and your child rather than a written activity. Home reading should not be laborious but we do want to make sure that your child is considering and reflecting on what they have read.
As discussed at the parent meeting, this is a change to the home reading program and I'm sure there will be some teething issues as we bed down the new process. Your patience would be appreciated and if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions please come and have a chat to me.
The home reading books can of course be supplemented with any reading material you have at home. We want to encourage a life long love of reading and if this means your child reads a magazine, a web site, a newspaper or an e-book, then roll with it!
Spelling
Students will receive their spelling list each Monday. They will need to write out their spelling words each night in preparation for Friday’s test.
It is good practice to ensure your child understands the meaning of each word. Put them into sentences or have your child look up the tricky ones in a dictionary.
Mathematics
Your child will receive their logon in Week 3. The aim is to complete 2-3 Mathletics activities each week.
Other Homework
Occasionally your child may be set another homework task. This generally will be a science task or a speaking and listening item. You will receive notification of this via your child's Communication Diary.
If you have any questions about homework or how best to help your child, please send me an email or pop into the classroom. Create a free website Powered by Start your own free website A surprisingly easy drag & drop site creator. Learn more.

Home Reading
It is an expectation that your child will read for a minimum of 20 minutes 4 nights a week. Learning to read is a long process that entails many facets. It is important to listen to your child read every night when they start bring home reading books and be both positive and encouraging. Home readers support our in class reading programme. Please remember children choose their own readers.

Additional Support
Students are able to access an online program called Study ladder and the tasks that are assigned for students will be for their year level. Study ladder can be a useful tool to access when at home to extend your learning, help consolidate and practice skills and a great resource if you are on holidays. Please click on the link below to access. Students will be given their Study ladder login in details in week 3 term 1 via their communication books.
